This morning Australian print mastheads the Age and the Sydney Morning Herald ran a piece called “What is Hamas?” Written for a dumbed-down Gen Z readership it tried to piece together the unfolding chaos in Israel since Hamas broke though the Gaza Strip last weekend wreaking a trail of bloodshed in southern Israel.

Ten years ago, when I wrote a perspective on the fortieth anniversary of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, I noted that between Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran roughly 60,000 missiles lay hidden waiting to be launched at Israel. I also observed the military threat that Iran posed to Israel conventionally and by weapons of mass destruction. This week marked the fiftieth anniversary of that war.

The Australian Special Air Service Regiment had the insurgents on the run. On the night of June 10 2010 as the Taliban shifted its defence west in the Shah Wali Kot Valley of southern Afghanistan Special Operations Command at Multi National Base Tarin Kot sixty-three kilometres north gathered intelligence. Next morning Blackhawk helicopters of the US 101st “No Mercy” Aviation Regiment dropped an assault force of roughly twenty elite SAS operators in three patrols from 2 Squadron outside the village of Tizak. They were to “kill or capture” the Taliban leaders there.

The AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-ground guided missile was built to kill tanks. On July 31, 2022, two of them, launched from a United States Air Force unmanned drone over Afghanistan, killed Ayman al-Zawahiri instead. Al Zawahiri had been leader of al Qaeda since the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011. In bin Laden’s time he was the organisation’s operational brain.
