By far the one thing that Australia’s Indigenous people need with a history tens of thousands of years long, is recognition in a White Man’s legal document telling them that they exist. More so that only through that recognition could they then have an avenue to speak to the White Man’s government.

It is hard to picture what 51,000 dead and wounded soldiers look like. The scene came in the third year of the US Civil War at a crossroads town in Pennsylvania. When Robert E. Lee’s Rebel Army of Northern Virginia fled the battlefield at Gettysburg on July 4 1863 he left behind the conflict’s bloodiest tragedy, and the Southern cause was over. Now one hundred and sixty years later some Americans are calling for a civil war anew.

It’s 2022, we’re in the third year of the global Covid-19 Pandemic and Ebola has broken out in Uganda. Eight years ago in 2014, I wrote about the last wide-spread Ebola outbreak as it then unfolded. I spoke of Western racism and pandemic unpreparedness. I spoke of grave danger and existential health risk. What I didn’t realise until finding it in my archives the other day, was that it predicted the debacle that’s been the West’s response to Covid-19.

It used to be fine for people to say that “All Lives Matter”. I sincerely believe in it. It’s empathetic to feel that all humanity has equal value. So, why is it now racist to express that credo? I had to think hard about it and it became very clear in light of the new Black Lives Matter protests.
