Little did I know that when I wrote in 2015 about a leadership spill in the Australian Coalition government led by Liberal Party prime minister Tony Abbott, I’d be gazing at the underpinnings of a federal election coming in six days’ time. It was then a story of a man lacking the motivation to lead Australia, who had thereby earned the ire of both his party and the Australian electorate. The outcome of that spill coupled with Abbott’s political opponent in the Australian Labor Party Bill Shorten, being equally hubristic in public, brought yet another leadership spill before the 2016 federal election.
